Parks and Gardens

Lyme Park, Tatton Hall, Arley Hall and Quarry Bank Mill are a little further away, but all well worth a visit.

Little Moreton Hall (near Sandbach, Cheshire) is the classic Cheshire black-and-white hall. It dates from the 15th century, and is a beautiful half-timbered manor house, set in formal gardens.

Chirk Castle (Chirk, Shropshire) was part of Edward I's fortress chain - massive stonework, lovely gardens and views out across the border country.

Erddig (near Wrexham) is a classic 18th / 19th century country house set in beautiful gardens, and tells the story of life above and below stairs.

Hawkstone Park (near Market Drayton, Shropshire) is a wonderful combination of 18th century follies and open parkland. It was a kind of Georgian theme park - designed to amuse and scare in equal measure!

Beeston Castle - perched on an outcrop above the Cheshire Plain, Beeston Castle was a built in the 13th century, by an earl of Chester. It is a stiff walk to the top, but the views make it all worthwhile. The crag on which Beeston sits shows the power of the ice sheets that once covered Cheshire - one side has been gouged into a steep cliff, while the other is a more gentle slope, making it a perfect place for a fortress.

Cholmondeley Castle Gardens (just 5 miles away) - romantic gardens, rambling woodland walks around the lake and a children's farm and play area make this a great family day out. There's a full programme of events throughout the year, too.
